History of the Institute

The Institute of the Franciscans Of St. Mary Of The Angels, was founded in 1871 by Fr. Chrysostom O.F.M. ( Ferdinand Potton ) and  Sr. M. Chrysostom  of  the  Cross (Caroline Rurange). They founded the Institute at the request of Msgr. Emile Freppel, the Bishop of Angers, in order to take care of the orphans, victims of the Franco- Prussian war.

The Founders chose the name of St. Mary Of The Angels because St. Francis of Assisi honoured the Virgin Mary under this title and made the sanctuary of the Portiuncula the cradle of his Order. It is affiliated to the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi, and it is a Religious Institute of the Pontifical Right.

The Mission activities of our Institute are spread to France, England, India, Ethiopia Brazil and Tanzania. In 1892, the Sisters arrived at Mhow, Indore district, Madhya Pradesh. They began their mission work by starting a needle work centre for the poor women of the area. Later on, seeing the need of education, they started an English medium school followed by a Hindi medium school and hostel for girls.
The FSMA Novitiate in India was established at Mhow in 1949. As the number of Indian sisters and missionary enterprises increased, the FSMA mission in India became a province of the Congregation in 1967. The further growth of the province necessitated its bifurcation into Mhow Province and Jaipur Province, each with its own Provincial Council and Novitiate.

The charism of the Franciscans of St. Mary of the Angels, has four dimensions:

Eucharistic Adoration -   Drawing strength from the Eucharistic Lord

Mission-                          Launching out to areas where people need help including foreign                                       mission lands.

Marian Spirituality -        Called to follow Christ as Mary did.

Franciscan spirituality-    Following the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi in                                      simplicity and poverty.

Our Mission

Conscious of the present reality of the world and striving to follow Jesus in a prophetic way, we FSMA Sisters assembled at the XIX General Chapter wish to announce anew and give witness today to the GOSPEL & MISSION of JESUS CHRIST.

We propose, therefore, to promote a gradual and systematic process of restructuring, renewing and deepening of our

- Spirituality
- Community life
- Mission
- Formation
- Governance

Recognizing the prophetic calls from God we make a fresh response through the situations / different socio-cultural contexts in the countries in which we live.

In order to achieve this goal, we emphasize a renewal in our way of being, which will be reflected in our attitudes, values and commitments.

Our Vision

We work to establish peace, harmony and wholeness by

- Strengthening our prayer life
- Deepening our concern for Mother Earth
- Shouldering our responsibilities to alleviate environmental degradation and all sorts of threats to    life.

Thus, in doing so, we work to create a harmonious wholeness in being

- One people
- One world
- One planet.

We the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary of the Angels, tread the path of love and service in the foot-steps of St. Francis of Assisi and our Founders.

We follow a four-faceted charism to help us to be rooted in God and thus be “ good news” through our apostolate.

In the present socio-economic scenario we work to establish peace, harmony and wholeness. To answer this call effectively constant guidelines are made available to us through various meetings, seminars, workshops but above all through spiritual renewal. The source of our strength is prayer.

As Franciscans, we are called to deepen our Christian commitment in living the values of Christ in our own lives and seeing the face of God in all creation.

Prayer life & Community life style

Within the Convent and its premises we pursue our life in the spirit of silence, absolutely necessary for equilibrium and asceticism for which each one of us is responsible.

Daily we have the Eucharistic celebration, the Divine office in the morning and evening together, an hour of adoration of the Eucharistic Lord as personal prayer and as a community we pray together for an hour in the evening. We consider it our privilege to spend the whole night in prayer, as desired by our Foundress, on the eve of feast days.

Each sister is encouraged to spend more time in prayerful contemplation, spiritual reading and meditation.

It takes time in faith, prayer and discernment to commit oneself to God in this way. The initial stages of religious life are designed to help a person grow towards a fuller understanding of what God is asking.
